Longview Disciples give free lunches to first responders

- By CAL BROWN

Even the threat of severe weather is not enough to stop the Longview Disciples 4-H Club from giving back to the community.

On Wednesday, the Longview Disciples were at First Baptist Church of Longview providing free to-go plates with lasagna, corn, green beans, a roll and a dessert to first responders of the community.

Angela Buress-stewart is the club leader for the Longview Disciples, and she said that she and her club wanted to give back to the first responders in a special way for their efforts in protecting our community.

“We’re just trying to do something to give back to the first responders of our community,” said Buress-stewart said. “Not just the first responders, but also the sanitation workers because they always forget the sanitation workers. So, we contacted them, and they’ve come by and grabbed their lunches. We just appreciate everybody who’s doing everything that they can to keep Starkville clean and safe.”

As the Starkville area and the rest of the state were under risks of severe weather on

Wednesday, Buress-stewart did not want to use it as an excuse to not serve the community.

“We just really appreciate everybody who’s been keeping us safe during this time,” said Buress-stewart. “We’re making sure that they get a hot meal, because they sometimes have to work nonstop without getting a bite to eat. Some of them may not get to eat hours at a time. We hope that just being able to provide them with a good lunch today helps them out some and lets them know that they’re appreciated for what they do.”

they were able to give out 200 lunches to first responders of the community.

“We just appreciate everything that the citizens of Starkville have been doing for the first responders during COVID-19, because that makes

them first responders too. They’re essential workers,” said Buress-stewart. “I wish we could do this for everybody.

Who knows, we may drop some off somewhere else, but we’ll get around to thanking everyone in some type of way or another.”

FBC Longview pastor Dr. Larnzy Carpenter Jr. along with the church’s deacon were sponsors for the event, partnering with the Light Youth, Missionary,

Silver & Gold Ministries at FBC Longview for a collaborative effort in giving back to the fire department, EMTS, sanitation workers, police department, sheriff’s department, elderly, essential workers and the community who give so much every day.
