Freshman guard Smith to depart Bulldog team

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Four days after the completion of the men’s basketball season at Mississippi State, a pair of freshman guards have made the decision to leave the program.

One day after seldom-used Keondre Montgomery entered the transfer portal, Deivon Smith announced on social media Wednesday that he was doing the same.

In a lengthy Twitter post, Smith wrote about his love for the Bulldogs and how much he enjoyed being around the program, but did not give a reason for the departure other than the fact that he was just moving on.

“After several extensive conversations with my family, I feel it is necessary for my career moving forward that I enter my name into the transfer portal,” Smith wrote. “This decision did not come as an easy one, but one that I am excited about as I look forward to beginning a new chapter in my life.”

Smith became one of the main players in the rotation for MSU head coach Ben Howland, especially in the stretch run of the season. He played in 33 games with eight starts.

During his time at point guard for the Bulldogs, Smith made 65-of-192 field goal attempts for 34%, including 19-of-68 from 3-point range, and he hit 24 of 39 of his free-throw attempts. He averaged 5.2 points per game and grabbed 3.6 rebounds per outing.

“This season has been one filled with many ups and downs, great games, tough losses, tears and joy,” Smith also wrote. “(There have been) life-long memories, relationships and bonds were formed along this journey, with a great group of teammates, coaching staff and supporters that I will never forget. The love shown to me by the entire Mississippi State basketball community has been second to none. From the day I stepped onto campus, I was welcomed with open arms, and for that, I am forever grateful!”
