Yellow Jackets qualify for state meet
The Starkville High School archery team recently participated in the Class 6A North State Qualifier in Tupelo and the Yellow Jackets outshot the host Golden Wave 3,271-3,219.
That result placed SHS in second and Tupelo fourth behind the last champion Saltillo.
Kylie Headley of the Jackets was the top female shooter with a 285, while Hayden Johnson and Joseph Forrestern tied for the top male shooter honors with 286.
SHS archery coach Bubba Forrester was thrilled with
nine-year how well his kids performed and looks forward to State competition next week.
“I am very proud of all my archers,” Forrester said. “They did very well. I feel confident my kids will continue to step up and perform better than they ever have.” The Jackets had four shooters that shot perfect rounds of 50 several times in Ethan Hicks, Forrester, Johnson, and Headley.
“Of the top 100 archers in North State, we had five females Kylie Headley, Jenna Holder, Cassandra Allen, Emma Powney and Cassin Gant; and four males Hayden Johnson, Joseph Forrester, Ethan Hicks, and
Andrew Phillips,” Forrester said. “Cassandra Allen and Emma Powney are brand new to archery this year. I had faith in them and they really showed out.”
Forrester explained that archery is a “gentleman” sport and is a perfect fit for many kids that do not want to or can not participate in contact sports and even some that do participate in contact sports love it.
“I have seen many of these kids come out of their shells and flourish with newfound confidence,” Forrester said. “I am excited to see our program continue to grow and excel.”
