Lady Wolverines defeat Lady Eagles

- By ROBBIE FAULK

EUPORA – Just a few days after East Webster run-ruled the Eupora Lady Eagles in softball action, the Lady Eagles made their adjustments as the two met at Eupora.

East Webster used the bunt to open up opportunities in game one of the series last week, but the Lady Eagles ready for it on Monday night. The issue for Eupora this time around is it still couldn’t find a way to manufacture hits against Liz Massey.

The Lady Wolverine pitcher shut out Eupora last Thursday and allowed just three hits in seven innings this week on the way to a 4-1 victory for East Webster to remain unbeaten in Class 2A, Region 2 play.

“Hats off to Liz,” East Webster coach Clayton Dodd said. “She threw really, really well (Monday). She hit spots and we had them pegged according to their swings. She made it happen.” Harper Doggett was good for the Lady Eagles as well to give the team a chance all game long. After the team got run-ruled in game one, Doggett took the circle for this game and threw all seven innings, scattered 11 hits and never allowed the Lady Wolverines to put together a huge inning.

Doggett gave up an early 2-0 lead but didn’t surrender another run until the sixth inning as East

Webster was able to manufacture an RBI single from Emma Mckee in the sixth and then a two-out RBI single from Abby Williams.

Eupora head coach Amir Hunt, who was ejected from the game in the sixth after getting into an argument with an umpire, was proud of the effort of the defense and the pitching of Doggett.

“I know it stinks to lose to your cross-county rivals, but I told the girls to hold your head up,” Hunt said. “We went tooth and nail with a team that basically embarrassed us the other night. What that tells me is our girls still believe they can beat really good teams. I thought Harper Doggett pitched really well and we defended the bunt much better, so there were some good things.”

Lady Eagle senior leader Meleah Pogue provided the only RBI for her team in the third inning when the lead was cut to 2-1, but the team couldn’t get any more the rest of the way. Massey never allowed much solid contact of the home team.

Eupora (12-7, 4-2 Region 2) will host Calhoun City today and will play Bruce on Thursday at home. The Lady Eagles are working for the No. 2 seed in the division.

For East Webster (16-4, 5-0 Region 2), Katelee Box led the team with a 3-for-4 night and a double. Hallie Beth Reed finished 2-for-3. The Lady Wolverines will wrap up district play this week and have a chance to clinch the division as they play J.Z. George today with a doubleheader and Calhoun City on the road on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
