Lady Eagles see season come to end

- By DANNY P. SMITH

EUPORA – It may have been a tough game for the Eupora Lady Eagles on Saturday, but the future looks bright for them in softball.

The season may have ended for Eupora with a 14-0 loss to East Union in four innings, but head coach Clay Grissom had reason to be encouraged.

The Lady Eagles were able to reach the third round of the Class 2A playoffs with a young team.

“We've got everyone coming back so the sky is the limit,” Grissom said about what can be moving forward.

The Lady Urchins came to town on

Saturday with the intent on generating offense and they did. East Union scored four runs on four hits in each of the first three innings to take control of the outing early.

After being able to hold East Union to four runs on Friday night in what Grissom called “nasty conditions,” Saturday was much different.

“You see the difference (Saturday) with the dry conditions and second time seeing the same pitcher,” Grissom said. “It gets a little more difficult and we knew it was going to be that way.”

While the Lady Urchins were building a lead, Eupora could never get anything going at the plate.

The Lady Eagles loaded the bases twice in the second or fourth innings, but couldn't get any runs.

“You never know what one or two runs can do to a game,” Grissom said. “It could completely change it. It was the same story (Friday). I felt like we were a few timely hits away from being a completely different story.”

Eupora was held to three hits with one single each by Harper Doggett, Bella White and Ansley Mason. Sydney Murphy, Neelie Dillinger and Doggett were able to reach base on errors and Dillinger walked in the second inning.

The Lady Eagles finished the season with a 12-13 record.
