Jackets blank Jaguars in jamboree

It was nice for Starkville High School head football coach Chris Jones to see a zero on the visitor side of the scoreboard at the end of three varsity quarters during Saturday's jamboree action against Desoto Central.

Now Jones wants the Yellow Jacket defense to build on that performance.

After Starkville outscored Desoto Central 40-0 in those three quarters, the work to improve continues.

“We're not going to be complacent because this is a spring game,” Jones said. “We've still got to stay humble. We want to continue and want to be consistent. Good defenses are consistent. We can't be good today and bad tomorrow. I'm happy we had a good day today, so now we've got to put good days together.”

It was a good day where the Jackets not only pitched the shutout on defense, but Trey Petty and the offense put up some points.

Jones is anxious to evaluate what SHS was able to do.

“It's not about the score,” Jones said. “It's about the kids getting better and having fun. The goal was to get better from the beginning of spring ball and I kind of feel like that's what we accomplished. Hopefully when we go watch film, it stays true to what we saw here today. When you watch film, you find out about mistakes, but that's what it's all for. I just want to see them get better, give us something to evaluate so we can have something to work on this summer.”

Petty had a touchdown run on an early scramble, then he threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jaylon York and completed a two-point conversion pass to Braylon Burnside.

Even though he didn't think it was his best day, Petty was thankful for the playmakers around that make him look better.

“I feel like I could have done better personally, but I felt like my team had a good day and much better than we started spring,” Petty said. “I feel like we improved as spring went on.”
