Lady Wolverines fall in game two to Lady Urchins

MABEN – A big game to get on Friday night on the road set up the opportunit­y on Saturday for the East Webster Lady Wolverines to clinch the first trip to a state championsh­ip game since 2016.

It was East Union that took control early, however, and the Lady Urchins never allowed East Webster to fully get a hold. A hot start and some insurance runs late allowed plenty of cushion for an East Union team that shut down the Lady Wolverines at the plate and evened the series at 1-1 with a 6-1 victory.

“We made no adjustment­s and had bad approaches against a really good pitcher,” East Webster coach John Harris said. “We'll se what we're made of in game three. (East Union) got hit in the mouth and responded and we got hit in the mouth. We'll see how we respond.”

It was a frustratin­g day at the plate for the Lady Wolverines (26-5) a day after getting some clutch hits on the road to get the key game one victory. The home team managed to scratch across just four hits and mostly had routine ground balls and pop ups to show for it at the plate.

Peyton Flora had an RBI double and Abby Williams a double as well, but those were the only multi-base hits and there were no players that reached more than once. There were also not many free passes as only one East Webster batter was hit by pitch.

The Lady Urchins got their hits though. The visitors came out early and got a couple of runs in the first inning with three hits after a leadoff walk and it was 2-0 before the Lady Wolverines could get an at bat. That lead grew to 3-0 with three more hits in the third.

The third inning brought promise for East Webster, but it was a missed opportunit­y. After Addison Edwards was hit by pitch and bunted over by Nashlynn Vickers, Flora got the
