Frostbite race is today

- By CAL BROWN

The Frostbite Race presented by Chickfil-a Starkville, which was started over 37 years ago, is a chilly annual event that draws runners from Starkville and surrounding areas, and everyone is gearing up for the latest edition of it today in Downtown Starkville.

Just like last year, this year's Frostbite will begin and end on Main Street and incorporate the Cotton District, Mississippi State University campus and Starkville's Historic District into the course. The traditional winter half-marathon will also include a 10K and 5K races to include more intermediate and novice runners and families. Chip timing, custom medals, and high quality swag will also help the Frostbite appeal to more runners and improve community involvement.

Portions of Main Street and Lafayette Street will be closed today from 5:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the races. Expect brief delays along the run route as officers assist runners through intersections. The run starts at 9 a.m. and will have an award ceremony at noon.

Brad Jones, one of the directors of the Frostbite, says it has been “a blessing” to continue to grow the race each year.

“We anticipate another record year for us,” said Jones. “We have people register from the Golden Triangle area all the way to the northeast. We've even had two guys from London show up a few years ago, so it really attracts anyone and everyone who wants to participate in the races.”

Melissa Rogers, community connections coordinator for the event's presenting sponsor Chick-fil-a Starkville, says that it's always good to partner with the community to provide events for families to spend quality time together as well as promote health and wellness, and the Frostbite is a natural fit for that.

“It brings people out into the community, a lot of families run it together, and it certainly represents who we are as a business. We've partnered with the race for several years and we're happy to keep doing that,” Rogers said.
