County election matchups set for this fall

Oktibbeha County is once again gearing up for its election cycle in 2023. This past Wednesday was the deadline for submission­s to qualify for the 2023 public office elections in Oktibbeha County.

The list announced by Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Tony Rook via his Facebook page includes candidates for the positions of Sheriff; Chancery Clerk; Circuit Clerk; Tax Assessor; Coroner; Constable for Districts 1, 2, and 3; Election Commission­ers for Districts 2 and 4; Justice Court Judges for Districts 1, 2, and 3; and Supervisor­s for Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Current Oktibbeha County Sheriff Steve Gladney is not seeking reelection, meaning there will be a new sheriff in town. Shank Phelps and John L. Rice will run against each other for that seat later this year.

For the position of Circuit Clerk, the incumbent Tony Rook intends to run for the position again and he will run unopposed. The case is the same for the position of Chancery Clerk as the incumbent Sharon Livingston will run unopposed as well.

For the position of Constable in District 1, it will be a four-candidate race with Joe Morse, Kenneth Watkins, William Ford, and Shannon Williams qualified.

In District 2, Curtis D. Randle is running unopposed for Constable.

As for District 3, James Lindsey and Ronald A. Hannah are both running against each other.

For the role of Coroner, Michael Hunt is running unopposed. The case is the same for the position of County Attorney with Haley Brown running unopposed.

For the Election Commission­ers, District 2 is unopposed with Sissy Smitherman running and so is District 4 with David Holley running.

As for the Justice Court Judges, District 1 is unopposed with William Anton “Tony” Boykin running, District 2 is unopposed with Larnzy Carpenter running, but District 3 will see three candidates in Brian Michael Linder, Will Mcneel, and C. Marty Haug.

As for the Supervisor­s, District 1 is the race with the most candidates as six, they are Ben Carver, Greg Fulgham, Erik Young, Ed Whitehurts, Ronnie Clardy, and Sammy Wade Jones. In District 2, incumbent Orlando Trainer is running unopposed, and so is incumbent

Marvell Howard in District 3. In District 4, Pattie Little and Austin Check are running

against each other. In District 5, the incumbent Joe Williams is running against Anthony Watt, Les Lindley, and Walter James Stewart.

For Tax Assessor, John Montgomery and Johelen

Walker are running against one another.

The 2023 Elections dates are scheduled for:

-Primary Election Day Tuesday, August 8

-Primary Runoff Election Day - Tuesday, August 29

-General/special Election Day - Tuesday, November 7

-General/special Runoff Election Day - Tuesday, November 28
