Butler of Jackets signs with Choctaws

- By DANNY P. SMITH

God and golf are huge parts of Caleb Butler's life.

The Starkville High School golfer put his future in God's hands and said that was the main factor in helping him decide to continue his career at Mississippi College. He signed with the Choctaws on Friday afternoon at the school library.

“I just felt like God was leading me in that direction,” Butler said. “I've been working really hard to go to college and play golf. I prayed about it a lot and I know that's where God eventually led me.”

College golf coach Ethan Doan, got to tour the campus and was impressed with the surroundings at the Clinton-based school.

“It was really incredible place,” Butler said. “I really love the campus and the people there. That was also a big factor for me choosing to go there.”

Sam Bryant has been in charge of the Yellow Jacket golf program for the last 15 years and Butler is his first boys signee.

To be able to share in the moment with Butler caused a sense of pride for Bryant.

“This is a new thing for me,” Bryant said. “He's been steady. He's been here since middle school and constantly improved. He works harder than any I've ever had. He is dedicated which you have to do in golf to reach the level he's reached so I'm proud of him. He's very deserving.”

Before he heads to Mississippi College, Butler has some unfinished business in Starkville.

The Jackets are scheduled to have their first tournament of the season on Wednesday and Butler is ready to attack the courses in the area with his teammates.

“We've got a really good team this year,” Butler said. “I'm just hoping we can really go far and hopefully win a lot.”
