Logan an important part of East Webster’s engine

- By ROBBIE FAULK

Where would East Webster be without Da'nasia Logan?

For Courtney O'briant-wright, she doesn't want to think about it. Just like a car won't go without its motor, it would be tough for the Lady Wolverines to power through without the energizer bunny that is their point guard.

With the team heading to the third round of the playoffs this week, Logan is a large reason why. Her defensive intensity, speed and relentless effort not only produces for herself, it gets the rest of the team going as well.

“She is very important,” O'briant-wright said. “I tell her that I know she gets tired, but she has to be on the court because she's the motor that keeps us going. A lot of high school kids play basketball because they need something to do, but she wants to play. She knows that she's good at it and she works all the time to get better.”

Logan gets it done on both ends of the court. She's leading the team in scoring at 15.7 points a game and despite being one of the smaller players on the court, she's averaging 5.4 rebounds a game. Her 5.8 steals a contest and 3.3 assists dig deeper into her importance on both ends.

As the playoffs have begun, Logan is taking things to the next level. She started by dropping 21 points against Myrtle in a win in round one last Monday. Logan was 8-of-18 from the field but had an incredible 12 steals and five rebounds. She followed that up in the biggest game of the year against New Site and got redemption from last year's tough season-ending loss by scoring 19 points and hitting key free throws down the stretch.

For those outings, Logan was chosen the OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week by The Starkville Daily News sports staff.

O'briant-wright saw Logan's toughness personified late in the New Site game when she started experiencing cramps but fought through it.

“It goes back to the running that we did,” O'briant-wright said. “I pushed her and her teammates to their limit that week and she caught cramps. “Against Myrtle, she kept getting elbowed in the stomach and she was still cramping from that. She started cramping in her legs after that. She wouldn't stay on the bench. She wanted that win. It feels good to have players like that having your back and want to give their all for you.”

Now Logan gets a chance to get the team back to Jackson and the Mississippi Coliseum for the first time in several years. The Lady Wolverines will travel to Mississippi Valley State to take on Baldwyn on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in the Elite Eight game. The winner makes it to the Class 2A semifinals.
