MSU beef specialist on a national board

- By BONNIE COBLENTZ

Brandi Karisch, Mississippi State University Extension Service beef specialist, has been named to a national board for the American Simmental Association, or ASA.

Karisch was elected to this organization's board of trustees to represent the eastern region. The ASA was founded in 1968 to leverage technology, education and collaboration to accelerate genetic profitability for the beef industry.

As Extension beef specialist at MSU, Karisch has a special interest in applied beef cattle management and improving efficiency in beef production. She and her husband, Matt Karisch, and their two sons own and operate MBK Cattle, which focuses on providing functional females that work in the show ring and pasture. They market cattle through consignment and private sales, and the family recently started a direct-toconsumer beef business.

In addition, Karisch is involved in numerous other state and national organizations where she holds leadership positions. Her work in Extension and involvement in the agricultural industry have resulted in several awards, including the 2022 Southern Section Animal Science Extension Award and the 2020 Mississippi Farm Bureau Farm Woman of the Year.

Joe Street, interim head of the MSU Animal and Dairy Sciences

Department, said Karisch will be an asset to this governing board.

“Dr. Karisch is a valuable faculty member of the Animal and Dairy Sciences Department, and she has provided exceptional leadership to the cattle industry of Mississippi and beyond,” Street said. “She is well respected and will certainly be an asset to the American Simmental Association.”
