SAAC announces first AIPP group exhibit of 2023

- By CAL BROWN

The Starkville Area Arts Council (SAAC) has recently announced its first Art in Public Places (AIPP) group exhibit of 2023.

The 2023 SAAC Spring Showcase will be displayed at the SAAC office on 122 East Main Street beginning tomorrow, March 6 and will kick off with a reception on the following day, Tuesday, March 7 from 5:30 p.. to 7 p.m. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided by SAAC to those who attend the reception.

SAAC says that the showcase's Spring theme represents “new life, new beginnings, reinvigoration, a shedding of the old, and a representation of starting over.”

The exhibit will feature 47 works by 26 artists, including photography, acrylic, oil, printmaking, visual poetry, digital, metal, and more.

Participating artists are local to Starkville and regional with some from Chicago, Alabama, and even Washington.

Per a release from SAAC, several pieces accepted to the exhibit are mixed media, including materials such as spray paint, pen and ink, found objects, resin, wood, beads and twine, and even rain.

“This show is extremely eclectic,” AIPP committee volunteer Walter Diel said in the release from SAAC.

Juliette Reid, SAAC'S program coordinator said, “the Spring Showcase this year has brought in a lot of new artists, especially students, who are doing some really cool and out-of-thebox work that we are really excited about. We are very excited to be able to display these pieces in our space that we've previously been unable to display properly."

The exhibit will be on display at the SAAC office and online on the SAAC website (www.starkvillearts.net/creativeeconomy) from March 6 until May 1.

More information on each artist and their works can be found on the online exhibit page.

As part of SAAC'S AIPP series, works may be listed for sale. SAAC provides reception and publicity and handles the collecting and reporting of state sales taxes on behalf of the artist for any works sold while taking a substantially reduced commission – 20 percent instead of 50 percent usually charged by galleries. The artist keeps 80 percent of the proceeds.
