Jackets defeat Wolverines

MABEN – The Starkville Yellow Jackets bounced back from their first baseball loss of the season Friday night to defeat area opponent East Webster 16-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Starkville was able to withstand a strong offensive effort out of the home standing Wolverines to pick up the victory and improved to 6-1 this season.

East Webster got things moving in the first inning as Carson Norwood drove in two runs with a single.

The Jackets pulled away for good with seven runs in the third inning. An error scored one run for Starkville, Parker Simpsom singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run, Ethan Pulliam doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring three runs, Brennon Wright drew a walk, scoring one run, and Kaleb Warnock threw a wild pitch allowing one run across the plate.

Jonas Coleman earned the win for the Jackets. He surrendere­d six runs on four hits over four innings, striking out four. Larkin Perry threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Cade Morrow took the loss for the Wolverines.

Morrow lasted one inning, allowing zero hits and one run.

Starkville had 12 hits with Kieran Coleman getting two doubles and a single, Simpson had a double and two singles and Wright added a pair of singles. Pulliam's double was the only other extra base hit for the Jackets.

East Webster launched one home run for the day. Briceton Johnson went for the long ball in the fifth inning. It was one of seven hits for the Wolverines. Morrow and Norwood each managed multiple hits for East Webster.

The Jackets are now headed to Biloxi to play three games in three days beginning against Columbia Academy on Monday.

NEW HOPE – The Starkville Yellow Jackets suffered their first loss of the season by dropping a four-run decision to the rival Trojans.

Wright had two hits for the Jackets.
