Norwood enjoys productive week for East Webster

- By ROBBIE FAULK

Throwing a no-hitter is something that many players aren't able to accomplish in their careers and doing it against a division rival is all the more special.

East Webster's junior pitcher Carson Norwood has now joined the list of those to accomplish such a feat. In the second game of the matchup with Nanih Waiya, Norwood came through in a big way by tossing five innings of no-hit baseball as the Wolverines were able to roll over the Warriors in a 12-2 run-rule win.

On top of the fact he didn't allow a single base knock, Norwood also put together a two-hit night.

“That was big, especially swinging the bat,” East Webster coach Blake Hutchison said of Norwood's game. “He hit so many balls hard in the series. On the mound, he's got really good stuff. He just throws too many pitches trying to be too perfect sometimes. Hopefully, he's starting to improve in that area and I thought we saw that last week.”

It was really a complete week for Norwood. In two wins against Nanih Waiya and a loss against Starkville, Norwood was 7-for-10 at the plate with multiple hits in every game. He knocked in six RBI and had a double. He also threw the no-hitter with two unearned runs thanks to a couple of errors by the defense and he had three walks and nine strikeouts in the 5.0 innings against the Warriors.

The fantastic week at the park made for an easy choice for Norwood to get the Starkville Daily News OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week honors.

Coming into the season, Norwood was one of the few pitchers with experience for the Wolverines. He's come in and provided that stability on the mound, but it's his plate presence that has really made his coach a happy man.

“Him and Cade (Morrow) were our most experienced pitchers coming into the season, so we've needed him to take that step and he's doing it,” Hutchison said. “He's got really good movement with his fastball because he's a little bit different arm slot. He competes pretty well out there. The biggest surprise to me is what he's doing at the plate. If he keeps all of that up, he's going to help us win a lot of game.”
