Vols win for third time at Battle at the Beach

BILOXI – The Starkville Academy Volunteers easily dispatched Parklane Academy 11-4 on Tuesday at the Battle at the Beach.

Starkville Academy opened up scoring in the first inning. Wyatt Hedges drove in one with a single.

The Vols collected four runs in the sixth inning as the offense in the inning came from singles by Brody Burkley and Creed Pierce and a sacrifice fly by Maddox House.

Justin Ming was credited with the victory for Starkville Academy. The righthande­r went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out five and walking one.

Luke Mckenzie had a home run for the Vols in the third inning.

That was one of seven hits for Starkville Academy as Burkley and Hedges collected two hits each.

The Vols (6-9) have won three out of four games so far during their Battle at the Beach stay.

The Vols fell behind early and couldn't come back in a loss to Arlington earlier on Tuesday.

Arlington scored on a double by Drew Benjamin and a sacrifice fly by Slade Williams in the first inning.

Arlington got on the board in the first inning. Benjamin doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs.

Weston Duke took the win for Arlington. The ace went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six.

Drew Williams took the loss for Starkville Academy. Williams allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings, striking out four.

Briggs Bennett and Mckenzie each collected one hit to lead the Vols.

Starkville Academy did not commit an error on defense.

Monday’s Game

The Vols defeated St Martin as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

Tanner Mckee had a strikeout to finish off the game for Starkville Academy.

The pitching was strong on both sides. The Vols struck out six, while St Martin pitchers sat down 11.

Mckee was the winning pitcher for Starkville Academy with two innings of work. He allowed zero runs on one hit, striking out three and walking one. Hedges threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Mckenzie started the game on the mound of the Vols. He allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out two and walking zero.

Starkville Academy tallied six hits for the day. Luke Johnson and Burkley each had two hits to lead the Vols.

Monday’s Game

A walk-off single led by Hedges lifted the Vols to a win in their first game of the Battle at the Beach.

The game was tied at 4-4 with Starkville Academy batting in the bottom of the seventh when Hedges singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Julian Kraker took the win for the Vols. The lefthander went two innings, allowing three runs on one hit and striking out one. Pierce threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Jackson Redmond started the game for Starkville Academy. Redmond went four innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three and walking zero.

The Vols collected nine hits. Johnson and Williams each managed two hits to lead the way.
