Webster County talent helps North to victory

- By ROBBIE FAULK

A couple of Webster County products had the opportunity to compete against some of the best Class A-3A juniors in the state of Mississippi this past week in Clinton.

East Webster's Da'nasia Logan and Eupora's Alexia Johnson both were selected to the state's Junior All-star games at A.E. Wood Coliseum last Saturday. It was a game in which the two Webster County stars helped lead the team to a 60-56 victory in what is their final game representing 2A.

“It meant a lot to me,” Logan said of the All-star selection. “I was very nervous going into the game, but coach Courtney (O'briant-wright) kept telling me to keep going and act like an All-star. Down the stretch I felt like I did really well in that game, and it was great to go up against the best in the state and show my worth.”

Logan finished the game with a team-high 10 points. She shot 2-of-4 from the field but made 5-of6 free throws. She also finished with four rebounds and an assist in just 14 minutes of play.

The East Webster star was huge down the stretch of the season for the Lady Wolverines. She led her team to the semifinals of the Class 2A playoffs with a loss in the Mississippi Coliseum against Heidelburg. She averaged a team-high 15.6 points, stole 5.7 passes, pulled down 5.6 rebounds and dished out 3.2 assists a game leading the team to a 23-11 record and a Class 2A, Region 4 championship win against Calhoun City in its gym.

For Johnson, it was an up and down season. The Lady Eagles finished the year 6-14 and failed to win a Region 4 game while getting sent home early in the district tournament. Johnson didn't play in the final few games of the season but was active in the All-star game.

The junior Lady Eagle hit four free throws and was the second-leading rebounder on the North team with five.

It was a proud moment for the coaches and East Webster coach Courtney O'briant-wright was happy to see one of her players get recognized.

“It was special,” O'briant-wright said. “When I first got the email to select some juniors, I didn't even hesitate putting Da'nasia and Madeline Warn on there. I called Da'nasia right to my classroom and told her I needed her measurables and all of her information right away. Her being selected in the All-star game is huge for us, but even bigger for her because it puts her out there on that stage. I'm really proud of her.”
