Vols drop both games of doublehead­er to Colts

Tuesday was a day of heartbreak for the Starkville Academy Volunteers on the baseball field.

After losing the first game of a Class 5A, District 1 doublehead­er to the Bayou Academy Colts 7-6 in nine innings, the Vols saw the second game last eight innings before losing a 4-1 decision.

Starkville Academy lost the lead late in the first game when Bayou Academy's Bo Linkous hit a solo home run in the ninth.

The Vols collected seven hits and the Colts added 12 in the high-scoring affair.

Starkville Academy opened up scoring in the second inning when Wyatt Johnson was struck by a pitch, driving in a run. The Vols scored three runs in the fourth inning on a home run by Johnson.

Bayou Academy scored four runs in the fifth inning and tied things up at 6-6 when Jack Ozbun singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.

Jackson Redmond took the loss on the mound for Starkville Academy. The southpaw went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and walking zero.

Johnson started the game for the Vols and surrendere­d six runs on 10 hits over seven innings, striking out four.

Starkville Academy collected seven hits for the game. Johnson and Luke Mckenzie each managed two hits each for the Vols.

Bayou Academy had a total of 12 hits.

The Vols out-hit the Colts 7-5 in the second game but only had one run to show for it.

After getting the run in the fifth inning, Starkville Academy did not score again.

Bayou Academy put up one run in the sixth inning and the deciding runs in the top of the eighth.

Redmond had a double and a single for the Vols, while Johnson had a double for the only other extra base hit.

Drew Williams had a masterful 6.2 innings as the Starkville Academy starter on the mound. He only gave up one run, which was unearned, on two hits with 15 strikeouts and only three walks.

Tanner Mckee and Mckenzie also worked in relief for the Vols.

With the two district losses, Starkville Academy saw its overall record fall to 7-11. The Vols and Colts will meet again on Friday in Cleveland.
