Whitney Wofford has always had a knack for flowers

- By CAL BROWN

On 401 East Lampkin Street sits the Flower Company, which Whitney Wofford has been running for about four Valentine's Days now. But she has always had her own flower shop for over a decade.

“I started the original flower company called Welch Floral Design and that was inside Welch Funeral Home, which my grandparents own. So I started kind of inside there while I was still in college. I was also working at an insurance place and drove back from Amory every day back here after I graduated,” said Wofford. “Then I bought out Hayes and I was there for probably six Valentine's Days. Then we bought this building we're in now.”

Wofford's first job was at Stewart's Town and Campus Florist, which she described as the ‘OG' flower shop.

I worked there and then I worked at Flowers by the Bunch for a little while. That's kind of all I did in high school,” said Wofford. “I graduated from Mississippi State with a degree in Marketing and Business Administration. I got way more experience from actually working in a flower shop, so I felt like it was more beneficial to get a business degree to learn that aspect of the business versus doing the flowers.”

When asked what it was that made her want to go into the floral business, Wofford says she's always had a knack for it.

“I've always just liked decorating stuff, even when I was little. My mimi used to do the tour of homes in Starkville and I loved helping her decorate for Christmas and it just came easy to me. Once I started working at a flower shop, I just thought, ‘This is it,'” said Wofford. “I could just watch somebody make something one time and then just recreate it. It's just my thing … I do love it because each day is different from the last day. No two days are ever alike and no two orders are ever alike. We don't make anything that's cookie-cutter.”

She is married to Chase Wofford, who also grew up in Starkville. Together, they have a son named Corbin. When she has free time outside of work, she and her husband usually spend it doing what Corbin wants.

“We live on 40 acres of land at the very end of Blackjack Road, so he likes to ride his little four wheel

er and we play outside with his little fort,” Wofford said.

Before she had Corbin,

Wofford says she used to be ‘more adventurous.'

“I love the outdoors. We used to go hiking in different places every week and we almost ran out of places to go that were near Mississippi

and Alabama within a couple hours,” Wofford said.

If you see Whitney around town, be sure to say hello.
