Northport Enters Postseason, Girls Advance

The Northport Mustangs began postseason play this week, and the boys fell to Springdale 67- 56, while the girls beat Valley Christian 45- 34. The Mustangs boys finish the season 12- 8 overall and 7- 6 in NE- 1B league play, and the girls are 10- 11 so far on the season and 6- 6 in NE- 1B league play.

At Curlew High School one of the boys’ play in games featured Springdale ( 11- 10, 5- 7) against Northport. The game was close at the beginning as the Mustangs trailed 14- 11 after the first quarter, but in the second the Chargers took control with a 24- 16 run to lead 38- 27 at halftime. In the second half Northport kept trying to chip away at the eleven point deficit, but could not make the comeback in a 67- 56 loss. Luke Judd had 16 points for Northport, while Teko Cates had 22 points for Springdale.

A girls’ play in game had Valley Christian ( 5- 11,3- 9) playing Northport, and the Lady Mustangs used a strong second quarter to earn the 11 point victory over the Panthers. Valley Christian opened up the game with a 10- 7 first quarter lead, but in the second the Lady Mustangs rallied with a 12- 2 run to take a 19- 12 lead into halftime. In the second half Northport continued to add to their lead and came away with the 45- 34 victory. Belle Stark had 15 points to lead the Mustangs.

This week Northport will face Wellpinit ( 19- 1, 14- 0) at Wellpinit on Wednesday at 7; 45 p.m. with both the winner and loser advancing to Saturday’s games at Medical Lake High School, game time and opponent to be determined.
