Colville Boys’ Seek Crossover Berth

- Chris Rader

Crimson Hawks boys’ basketball won their opening game of the NEA playoffs, a 48- 43 come from behind victory over Newport before losing their semifinal game against Freeman 8551. This sets up Colville to play in the 3/ 4 place game against Deer Park on Wednesday evening for a spot in the District 6/ 7 crossover game.

On Wednesday Colville hosted Newport ( 5- 14, 4- 8) and the Crimson Hawks fell into a hole early on, finding themselves trailing 11- 0 with 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter, but Colville rallied with an 8- 0 run of their own and trailed 11- 8 after the first quarter. Colville continued their hot shooting in the second quarter and took the lead midway through the quarter and led 22- 16 at halftime. In the second half the Crimson Hawks continued to play tough, scrapping for points and keeping Newport off the scoreboard, Colville led 35- 26 after three quarters. In the fourth the Grizzlies applied a little pressure to the Crimson Hawks lead, but despite being outscored 17- 13 Colville held on for the 48- 43 victory. Colbie McEvoy scored 20 points to lead the Crimson Hawks while Ronan Sherman had 10 points for Newport.

Colville head coach Braden Titmus felt the Crimson Hawks had to really work for this victory, “We definitely overcame a lot of adversity, and we’re proud of the boys for working hard like that.”

The win over Newport set up Thursday’s matchup against NEA leaders Freeman ( 19- 2, 12- 0) at West Valley High School, and once again the Crimson Hawks started out slow, finding themselves trailing 24- 12 after the first quarter, but a rally was not on the menu on this evening. Colville trailed 37- 22 at half and by 19 after three quarters and in the fourth the Scotties made sure there was no doubt on the outcome by outscoring Colville 29- 14 to cruise to a 85- 51 win over the Crimson Hawks. Luke Anderson had 24 points for Colville, while Game Schulhauser had 25 points for Freeman.

The semifinals loss sends Colville ( 7- 14, 6- 6) to the 3rd/ 4th place game against Deer Park ( 12- 9, 8- 4) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with the winner moving on to the District 6/ 7 crossover game this Saturday at Omak ( 15- 5, 9- 3) at 5 p. m.
