On the Road
What started in 1995 as a way to raise money for a youth soccer field has become the largest one-day specialinterest car event in the world. The Woodward Dream Cruise brings more than 1 million people and 40,000 special-interest vehicles to this stretch of Woodward Avenue, and the activities run from downtown Detroit to Pontiac. People from around the globe travel to Detroit for this event that takes place every year on the third Saturday of August. While that Saturday is officially the Dream Cruise, the activities up and down Woodward Avenue begin days and weeks and months in advance as the excitement builds.
The Road Tour has been attending the Dream Cruise for the last dozen years and this year the United Pacific/ STREET RODDER Road Tour is sponsored by the good folks at Motor City Solutions (MCS) in nearby Taylor, Michigan. We have visited Jeff Adwell and his MCS team in the past. Their shop is huge and filled with street rod projects, muscle car builds, and hot rod repair services on all types of special-interest vehicles. MCS is also the new home of American Speed and the Speed33 roadsters. Jeff decided that MCS is so excited about folks visiting Detroit that he wanted to sponsor our entire week of activities in Southeast Michigan.
This week’s Woodward Tour fun begins on Monday, August 13, in Dearborn with our first drivers’ meeting of the
Tour. We will then visit the original Ford plant on Piquette Avenue, enjoy a shrimp boil at MCS, and get a look at the grounds of Fair Lane, Henry Ford’s first residence. On Tuesday we will spend the day at The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.
That evening we will enjoy outdoor movies at the hotel. On Wednesday, we head west and stop by Michigan International Speedway on our way to the fantastic Gilmore Car Museum.
On Thursday we will visit the Stahls Automotive Collection, visit a private collection of hot rods, and tour the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate. Friday starts off at an amazing private collection of vehicles in downtown Detroit. Then we will work our way up Woodward Avenue to our special hospitality tent and parking area at ground zero for all of the activities of Friday and Saturday on Woodward Avenue.
It is going to be a wild week of activities on the Motor City Solutions Woodward Week Tour. Go to streetrodder.com to register for any or all of our 2018 Road Tours. Check out our complete schedule of page 108 of this issue. Call the Road Tour Hotline at (800) 664-1362 for answers to any of your questions. We hope you can join us in Detroit!
