The West Goes Wild When Street Rods Come to Reno

For several years, STREETRODDER has been coming to Nevada in August to cover Hot August Nights. This is a car show without borders. The action lasts for a week and spans the entire region from Virginia City to Sparks with Reno being the epicenter of this event. Show cars, entertainment, vendor displays, racing, and cruising takes place all over, but the heart of Hot August Nights happens on and around Virginia Street in downtown Reno. That’s where you’ll find the Downtown Reno show ’n’ shine competition presented by Summit Racing Equipment, evening cruising, and the Hot August Nights Cup competition, to name just a portion of the attractions.

Spectators and participants know that the way to experience everything Hot August Nights has to offer is to keep moving. Spectators want to see it all—and the 6,000 vehicles that comprise the event are spread over several sites. Stay in one place and you’ll miss a lot of the action. Participants want to be seen—and maybe win some of the $150,000 in show ’n’ shine prize money. That means making the rounds to the various show ’n’ shine venues offering judging and awards. Active spectators will probably notice show cars and trucks in one place one day and in another place the next.

Show ’n’ shine and cruising action takes place at the larger casino resorts in the city, particularly at the Grand Sierra, The Atlantis, The Peppermill, and the Nugget in Sparks. Enormity, variety, and quality are what make Hot August Nights so hot.
