Bed Wood and Parts’ Solution for Aging Trucks

TIME AND WEATHER can negatively affect older trucks, necessitating repairs. Body panels tend to rust, and wood bed floors rot from exposure to the elements. Though rust isn’t a big issue on our ’62

GMC, the wood bed floor was barely hanging on. The look of the older wood on this patinastyle truck didn’t bother us, but because the wood was also disintegrating, function was becoming a problem. We couldn’t put any substantial weight in the bed without the floor giving out.

We knew that replacing the floor would be an involved process, so we put it off for as long as we could. Eventually, not only was the floor completely in danger of collapsing, but the sides had become loose too. Once we came to grips with the fact that the bed floor needed to be repaired, like yesterday, we were left with a few options. We’d heard good things about Bed Wood and Parts, which specializes in the type of bed floor we have. Company reps guide customers through the process of selecting a bed floor, and Bed Wood does custom orders as well. Its inventory consists of more than 20 different species of wood to choose from, ensuring you get the look you’re after.

When we called Bed Wood and Parts we told the staff that we needed a new floor, but we weren’t sure in which direction to head because we wanted to maintain the aged look of our truck. The staff assured us that we could keep the original aged strips.

We also use the truck to haul gear, so we were concerned about choosing a type of wood and finish that wouldn’t be too delicate or easily damaged.

Pine is generally considered a good, economical choice, but the Bed Wood staff had a better solution for us.

For anyone who wants a rich wood appearance and durability, Bed Wood and Parts has created a patented product called Thermx. This plank style starts with domestically harvested ash hardwood that is completely natural and chemical free. The wood is treated under extremely high temperatures (400-plus°f) and pressure.

The thermal process removes sugars from the wood, creating a green alternative to chemically preserved versions. The wood has a Class 1 exterior durability rating and needs no further treatment to retain its eye appeal.

Bed Wood and Parts has one more service that made it easier for us to install the kit. The company offers predrilled wood strips to accept the bed’s hardware. You will have to make quite a few measurements on the front end, but it does make for a quicker installation process.

A single person can install the kit in a weekend with the right parts and tools at the ready. The process was a lot less daunting than we anticipated. Check out the following steps to see how simple it is to install a new wooden bed floor.
