THE GO GUIDE A military salute and Led Zeppelin wars

Sun Sentinel Broward Edition - Showtime - Broward - - FRONT PAGE -

There are many ways to honor Veterans Day this weekend. How about a beer?

Both are the top of the mind for Mike Halker, former member of the U.S. Army’s 61st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit at Fort Sill, Okla., and now owner of Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach.

This weekend, Due South will begin serving a beer dedicated to veterans of all branches of the military called Land, Sea and Air IPA, brewed with a Veterans Blend of hops created from hops supplier Yakima Chief that were hand-selected by a group of veteran-owned breweries from across the country. A portion of the proceeds from every glass of Land, Sea and Air IPA sold at Due South on Saturday and Sunday will go to the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund of Florida.

“Throughout the year, we support our friends that have served in the military, but on Veterans Day we wanted to do something special,” Halker said in announcing the new beer, a collaboration with veterans who work for his local distributor, Brown Distributing.

“The way things came together, from the Veterans Blend hops to the vets from Brown Distributing coming over for the brew to bringing in our friends at Wounded Veterans Relief Fund, has been fantastic,” Halker said. “As a vet myself, these folks will always be paramount when it comes to our support. We greatly appreciate their service.”
