Walk this way: ‘The Walk to Defeat ALS’
More than1,000 people will gather March 2 at T-Y Park for “The Walk to Defeat ALS.”
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, progressively paralyzes those diagnosed, attacking nerve cells and pathways in the brain or spinal cord.
Registration for the race begins at 8:30 a.m.; the walk starts at 10 a.m. Entry is free, though participants are encouraged to fundraise. T-Y (Topeekeegee-Yugnee) Park is located at 3300N. Park Blvd., Hollywood.
ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease for which there is no known cause or cure. Proceeds raised through the walk will support patient care and comfort, as well as research for treatments and a cure.
ALS patients, including those in wheelchairs, will hit the pavement to raisemoney for a cure. Many walkers have a loved one fighting the disease or will be walking in memory of someone.
The “Walk to Defeat ALS” is the association’s signature event; all funds directly support cutting-edge research, programs and patient care. Last year, the walks raised more than $1 million in the state of Florida.
The ALS Association Florida Chapter is part of a nationwide network of local chapters with the same vision – a world without ALS. Through care, advocacy, research, education and support, the organization strives to empower those with ALS to live fuller lives.
