Spot­light­ing the work of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Ba­bies Coali­tion of Broward County

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Ba­bies Coali­tion (HMHB) of Broward County Inc. has been ded­i­cated to re­duc­ing in­fant deaths by strength­en­ing fam­i­lies through a com­pre­hen­sive ap­proach to pre­na­tal care, par­ent­ing, ed­u­ca­tion and sup­port ser­vices since 1987.

Pro­grams in­clude Cribs for Kids, Ed­u­ca­tion Ser­vices, Fa­ther­hood Men­tor­ship Pro­gram, Fe­tal/In­fant Mor­tal­ity Re­view, For­get Me Not be­reave­ment sup­port, Healthy Fam­i­lies, The Ma­hogany Pro­ject, Oral Health for Preg­nant Women, Mothers Over­com­ing Ma­ter­nal Stress (MOMS) pro­gram, Teen Col­lab­o­ra­tive Pro­gram and Clos­ing the Gap.

Case man­agers at HMHB reach out to mothers, fa­thers and their chil­dren to pro­vide vi­tal ed­u­ca­tion and ser­vices that ben­e­fit the health and well-be­ing of the fam­ily, and strive to foster healthy liv­ing prac­tices that will hope­fully con­tinue to be passed to fu­ture gen­er­a­tions.

HMHB of Broward de­pends on grant fund­ing and com­mu­nity sup­port. The board of di­rec­tors as­sists and sup­ports the or­ga­ni­za­tion’s goals of rais­ing funds, spread­ing aware­ness and help­ing to strengthen pro­grams and re­sources through their di­verse roles in the com­mu­nity. Sev­eral board mem­bers are af­fil­i­ated in the med­i­cal com­mu­nity, such as Me­mo­rial Health­care, Broward Health, Sev­enth Av­enue Clinic, Pe­di­atric As­so­ciates and West­side Re­gional. Other board mem­bers in­clude at­tor­neys, ac­coun­tants, me­dia spe­cial­ists and com­mu­nity vol­un­teers.

HMHB of Broward is con­stantly grow­ing in its abil­ity to reach more fam­i­lies in the com­mu­nity with the re­cent ad­di­tions of in­no­va­tive pro­grams such as the Oral Health Pro­gram, Clos­ing the Gap, Learn­ing To­gether: Ed­u­ca­tion Readi­ness for Young Chil­dren with their Fa­thers, and Emer­gency Ba­sic Needs As­sis­tance. The agency host train­ings, con­fer­ences and sem­i­nars that are avail­able to health care pro­fes­sion­als and the com­mu­nity at large. HMHB of Broward was re­cently rec­og­nized at the 211 Non­profit Acad­emy Awards for its col­lab­o­ra­tive ef­forts with Fort Laud­erdale Fire-Res­cue.

HMHB of Broward en­cour­ages com­mu­nity in­volve­ment through Mom­mies of the Roundtable, a Mother’s Day Lun­cheon and other events, as well as mone­tary and inkind do­na­tions, such as new or gen­tlyused ma­ter­nity and baby clothes, and in-kind items for raf­fles and silent auc­tions. They also have a Spon­sor a Fam­ily for the Hol­i­days pro­gram. Through the pro­grams, ser­vices, out­reach and com­mu­nity ed­u­ca­tion, HMHB of Broward strives to be a leader in Broward County’s Ma­ter­nal and Child Health Sys­tem.
