Spotlighting the work of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County
Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) of Broward County Inc. has been dedicated to reducing infant deaths by strengthening families through a comprehensive approach to prenatal care, parenting, education and support services since 1987.
Programs include Cribs for Kids, Education Services, Fatherhood Mentorship Program, Fetal/Infant Mortality Review, Forget Me Not bereavement support, Healthy Families, The Mahogany Project, Oral Health for Pregnant Women, Mothers Overcoming Maternal Stress (MOMS) program, Teen Collaborative Program and Closing the Gap.
Case managers at HMHB reach out to mothers, fathers and their children to provide vital education and services that benefit the health and well-being of the family, and strive to foster healthy living practices that will hopefully continue to be passed to future generations.
HMHB of Broward depends on grant funding and community support. The board of directors assists and supports the organization’s goals of raising funds, spreading awareness and helping to strengthen programs and resources through their diverse roles in the community. Several board members are affiliated in the medical community, such as Memorial Healthcare, Broward Health, Seventh Avenue Clinic, Pediatric Associates and Westside Regional. Other board members include attorneys, accountants, media specialists and community volunteers.
HMHB of Broward is constantly growing in its ability to reach more families in the community with the recent additions of innovative programs such as the Oral Health Program, Closing the Gap, Learning Together: Education Readiness for Young Children with their Fathers, and Emergency Basic Needs Assistance. The agency host trainings, conferences and seminars that are available to health care professionals and the community at large. HMHB of Broward was recently recognized at the 211 Nonprofit Academy Awards for its collaborative efforts with Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue.
HMHB of Broward encourages community involvement through Mommies of the Roundtable, a Mother’s Day Luncheon and other events, as well as monetary and inkind donations, such as new or gentlyused maternity and baby clothes, and in-kind items for raffles and silent auctions. They also have a Sponsor a Family for the Holidays program. Through the programs, services, outreach and community education, HMHB of Broward strives to be a leader in Broward County’s Maternal and Child Health System.
