Dyson took rough path tomarlins

WASHINGTON — The newest addition to the Marlins’ pitching staff comes withaninordinateamountof battle scars, considering his brief resume.

Sam Dyson racked up an assortment of surgeries in college, including a labrum repair to his pitching shoulder, and still helped pitch South Carolina to a College World Series title in 2010. Tommy John surgery to his right elbow cost him what should have been his first professional season in 2011.

There is also an ugly 40.50 ERAfroma very brief call- up with the Toronto Blue Jays last season. Itwasmostly due to giving up three runs and four hits to the Yankees in 1⁄

3 off an inning.

“In my opinion, it was bleeder after bleeder. Didn’t give up any home runs or balls off thewall,” Dyson said of his first visit toYankee Stadium. “I can cut [ the ERA] in half pretty quick.”

Though 25, theTampanative has logged only 61 appearances and 185 1⁄ innings

3 in the minors. He had a 2.67 ERA in 22 games ( 21 starts) for three Marlins minor league teams this season after being claimed offwaivers fromToronto in January.

“Probably just not understandingmy body. Just going out there and trying to throw too hard all the time and wearingdownandgetting injured,” Dyson said of his injury history.

After pitching mostly out of the bullpen in the Blue Jays system last year, he thrived in a return to starting this season. He has been working on a breaking ball, needing an extra pitch for facing hitters multiple times in an outing.

“I really didn’t knowIwas going to start when I came over here,” Dyson said. “It’s pretty good because it’s routinebased.”

His first assignment with theMarlins will be as a long reliever. Considered a candidate to be called up Sept. 1 when rosters expand, Dyson was summoned early from Triple- A New Orleans after the Marlins’ bullpen was overworkedWednesday due to a rain delay that ended starter Henderson Alvarez’s night after 1 2⁄ innings. Arquimedes

3 Caminero was optioned to the Zephyrs.

“He’s been starting, so he’s able to give us multiple innings, which is nice to have [ in the bullpen],” said Marlins manager Mike Redmond, who had Dyson for part of last season at Class A Dunedin. “He’s done a nice job in the minor leagues. I knowhe’s got a good fastball, a sinker.”

Who’s on third?

The strange play that had two Marlins sliding simultaneously into third base Wednesday has gone viral.

Logan Morrison got caught between third and home on a grounder to third. While he was in a rundown,

DonovanSolanoracedfrom first to third. The Nationals’

Ian Desmond finally tagged out Morrison and nearly got Solano aswell.

“It looked like they both got there right at about the same time. It was good that Solano slid. I thought the call was right and the play was the right play,” Redmond said. “LoMo needed to try to stay in that rundown and Solano did a nice job of reading it the right away. He didn’t hesitate, he kept coming. It endedupworkingoutforus.” The next hitter, Jeff

Mathis, drove in Solanowith a single.
