Funeral procession for deputy is likely to affect traffic today

Motorists in Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale and North Lauderdale can expect traffic delays today as the funeral procession for Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Rivera makes its way fromfunera­l home to church to cemetery.

Rivera, 32, died Saturday at Broward Health North, 10 days after crashing into a palm tree off Interstate 95 while traveling to work on a dark, rainy morning.

Mourners gathered Thursday afternoon at First Baptist Church of Pompano Beach for the visitation.

“Hewas a verywarm, lovable person. It’s such a shame,” said Edythe Lamb, who works with BSO’s Citizens On Patrol. “He was beautiful, very easygoing, a really nice guy.”

Rivera’s commanding officer, Maj. John Hale, praised the deputy.

“He did an outstandin­g job,” Hale said. “It’s a tremendous loss for us, but it’s our job nowto never forget what be did for us.”

The funeral procession will take to

the streets of Pompano Beach about 10: 15 Friday.

One arm of the procession will depart from Forest Lawn FuneralHom­e at 200W. CopansRoad and merge with another coming from Pompano Citi Centre at Copans and FederalHig­hway.

The joint procession then will headwest on Copans to I- 95 south, exiting at Cypress Creek Road and traveling west to Calvary Chapel at 2401 W. Cypress Creek Road in Fort Lauderdale.

Thefuneral is scheduled to begin there at 11a. m. followed by burial at Our Lady Queen ofHeaven cemetery at 1400 State Road 7 in North Lauderdale.

When the procession leaves the church, it will travel west on Cypress Creek to Northwest 31st Avenue, continuing south to Prospect Road and then west to State Road 7.

Capping off the farewell at the cemetery will be a 21- gun salute, taps, a flyover and an end- of- watch radio call.
