Juste falls out of favor in FAU offense

- DieterKurtenbach

BOCA RATON — All preseason FAU offensive coordinator Brian Wright and coach Carl Pelini spoke about freshman quarterback DJ Juste in excited tones

The Port St. Lucie product wasn’t vying to start at quarterback, but that’s because the FAU coaches didn’t want to limit Juste’s impact.

They schemed ways to get Juste the ball as often as possible. They saw the freshman as a game- changing athlete at running back, wide receiver and running the option as a quarterback — and those were merely the looks they showed on the field.

Juste’s package is called “bombers” presumably for the effect it was supposed to have on opposing defenses this season.

But so far, Juste has been used sparingly — no where near the amount of times FAU coaches threaten to unleash him on opposing defenses this summer. Since carrying the ball seven times for 28 yards against Miami, Juste has been mostly used as a decoy. He had one carry against ECU, three garbage- time runs at South Florida and he didn’t touch the ball lastweek against MTSU.

“We got into a rhythm in a certain part of our offense, butwe didn’t use [ Juste’s] part,” Wright said.

Juste’s veer and end- around runs didn’t fit into the game plan. Wright can’t project when they will. He’s thinking using Lucky Whitehead as a speed receiver in the slot might be a more prudent move for the Owls’ offense.

Next Game: At Rice, Saturday at 7 p. m., Fox College
