Pine Crest center Vrankovic commits to play for Duke

- By Dave Brousseau Staff writer

Set to sign with Duke later this month, Pine Crest center Antonio Vrankovic could become the only player from Broward County to ever suit up for the Blue Devils.

The 6-foot-11 big man on Wednesday tweeted, “Proud to announce that I’m committing to Duke University!”

The three-star Croatian prospect, whose father Stojko Vrankovic played NBA ball with the Celtics, Timberwolves and Clippers, plans to sign with Duke on April 30.

Only 12 players from Florida have ever played for Duke, with many of those coming out of Miami.

Vrankovic, who averaged 28 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks for Pine Crest, will join the reigning NCAA champion’s roster just as star center Jahlil Okafor departs for the pros. A McDonald’s All-American nominee, Vrankovic this season tied Pine Crest’s record for most points in a game — scoring 55 against Taravella on Jan. 19. The mark was previously held by Brandon Knight.

Pippen to coach?

Former Chicago Bulls All-Star Scottie Pippen is being courted to become the new boys basketball coach at Pine Crest.

Pine Crest athletic director Jeff Johnson met with Pippen over breakfast earlier this week to discuss the possibility.

Pippen is interested in becoming the coach, but would have to work out details because he’s still employed by the Bulls organization.

The boys basketball position opened up in early March when David Beckerman resigned. The former Panthers coach spent10 seasons at the school finishing with a 241-69 record and three state championships.
