Strengthening ties to Palm Beach County’s United Way

- By Cindy Kent Staff writer

Who: United Way of Palm Beach County recently promoted Alexia Savage to the new position of senior vice president of communications and resource development. The move is an extension of the role she has filled for the last three years as vice president of marketing and brand management. She has been responsible for a partnership with the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties in the Great Give, a 24-hour online fundraising event that raised $2.2 million for 330 nonprofits. She recently won two awards from Gold Coast Public Relations Council for her work on the Great Give and received national recognition from Give Local America.

How my role is important: This is a consolidation of my past and current position, designed to strengthen the relationship between marketing and resource development. Resume Experience: Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale. Worked at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art and then finally at the Norton Museum of Art; and Tilson PR.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in art history; master’s degree in nonprofit management, both from Florida Atlantic University. On the job Top goal: To increase the dollars that directly support United Way’s work in Palm Beach County.

Industry wisdom: If you aren’t growing and changing and learning or trying new things, you stagnate. I think that applies to organizations as well as individuals. Career Strategies What’s new: Everything is different! Facebook didn’t exist when I started in marketing. You really can’t just have one skill set anymore — it’s all encompassing and so intertwined.

Professional development: I’m in Leadership Palm Beach County and a member of the Gold Coast PR Council, which has great mixers and lunch-and-learn opportunities.
