More buyers making low downpayment
South Florida saw a first-quarter increase in homes and condominiums bought with low-down-payment loans, a new report shows.
From January through March, 22 percent of all Broward County purchases involved down payments of 3 percent or less, according to RealtyTrac, a foreclosure listing firm. In the first quarter of 2014, 20 percent of all Broward homes were bought with low money down.
In Palm Beach County, 20 percent of buyers put little money down, compared with 16 percent a year ago.
“Slowly but surely, first-time homebuyers are coming back into the market,” said Daren Blomquist, a spokesman for RealtyTrac in Irvine, Calif.
Blomquist says buyers are benefiting from new loan programs started by government-run mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Lower insurance premiums for Federal Housing Administration also are helping, he said.
