‘Win an Inn’ contest spurs probe in Maine

CENTER LOVELL, Maine — State police are investigating whether an innkeeper violated state law in an essay contest in which her 210-year-old inn was the prize, a spokesman said Monday.

The investigation focuses on whether the “Win an Inn” contest violated state law governing games of chance, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The Boston Globe reported Monday that some contest losers felt the odds were stacked against them.
