Police search for gunman after man slain at Hallandale store
HALLANDALE BEACH — In front of the red and yellow facade of the Kwik Stop Food Store in Hallandale Beach on Tuesday, the blood of a man killed by gunfire stained the sidewalk, and medical gloves and his clothing lay beside it.
Three police agencies searched for the suspected gunman, Stefan Giovanni Stewart, in connection with the shooting that happened about 1 p.m. outside the convenience store at 805 Foster Road.
The victim, identified by police as John Henry Richburg, 27, was transported by Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died.
Witnesses told police Richburg was sitting in the passenger seat of a white van parked in front of the store when the gunman approached the passenger side, shot Richburg through the window and fled, Hallandale Beach Police Capt. Sonia Quinones said. The reason for the gunfire was unknown, she said.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office and Hollywood police helped Hallandale Beach’s officers, including K-9s, search for the suspect, Quinones said. Detectives could be seen questioning two men outside the store and at least one was let go. Streets were closed to traffic in the neighborhood a few blocks east of Hallandale Beach High School and south of Pembroke Road, as a Broward Sheriff’s helicopter circled in the sky.
The search proved unsuccessful, and authorities issued a warrant for Stewart’s arrest. Stewart, 23, is considered armed and dangerous and is thought to be driving a red Honda, Quinones said.
Police urge anyone with information about Stewart’s whereabouts or the shooting to call Hallandale Beach Police Detective Mejdoub at 954-457-1436 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-8477.
