Worker killed while unloading car hauler
A 37-year-old worker died Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car while unloading vehicles from a car hauler on South Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Ivan Figueras-Pino of Miami pulled over the tractor trailer to unload a vehicle in the 400 block just before 11 a.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
Figueras-Pino put his hazards on and lowered the ramp on the car hauler, which was stopped on the side of the northbound lanes.
“[Figueras-Pino] was inside the back of the truck removing the chains from a car on the top rack when an approaching northbound driver failed to stop,” Moschella said.
Joshua Stein of Oakland Park drove a 2015 Hyundai Accent up the lowered ramp and hit Figueras-Pino, Moschella said.
“It did not appear to Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives that [Stein] attempted to stop or swerve to avoid the car hauler before the collision,” Moschella said.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Figueras-Pino to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Moschella said.
Stein was treated for minor injuries and released from Broward Health North.
Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident, Moschella said.
