Angler lands 9-pound bass in Kendall canal

It’s been a good week for catching big fish for customers of Capt. Alan Zaremba.

Monday morning, Jason Marlow of Clearwater released a 9-pound largemouth bass using a floating Rebel Minnow in the C-100 Canal in Kendall.

Marlow and Bryan Julian of Dover also had18 peacock bass up to 4.5 pounds.

Zaremba, of Hollywood, reported that water levels in Everglades canals have been stable, and fish were biting frogs, 7-inch ribbontail worms and Flapp’N Shads on the surface. Spawning peacock bass in urban canals were biting Zaremba’s AZ Jungle Jigs and flies.

Scott Waksmacki of Lighthouse Point, his wife, Cathy, and their son Nicolas, 12, caught 22 peacocks up to 4.5 pounds in the C-8.

Rick Eisner and his son Jade, 17, of Lafayette, La., caught 35 peacocks up to 6.25 pounds in the C-4.

Peter Bundy and Joe Santarossa of Windsor, Ontario, caught 29 peacocks up to 5.5 pounds with Zaremba fly fishing in the C-4.

Fish of the week

Dr. Mark Stavitsky of Parkland and his father, Dr. Burt Stavitsky, 89, of Boca Raton, went fishing last week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for the 10th consecutiv­e year and caught striped marlin of 120 and 90 pounds and seven jack crevalles ranging from 20-60 pounds on El Piojo with Capt. Carlos Rodriguez.

Tony Crowder caught a 7.25-pound bass on a16-inch Gambler worm Sunday to win the Everglades Bassmaster­s One Largemouth Bass Tourney at Everglades Holiday Park. Tony Manganello and his daughter were second with a 5.28.

TV shows: “Changing Seas, WPBT2’s Emmy award-winning series, has an episode at 8 p.m. Wednesday entitled “Billfish: Battle on the Line” that looks at commercial fishing of billfish, including sailfish and marlin, in the Pacific Ocean. At 8:30 p.m. is “The Secret Sex Life of Fish,” which examines tropical fish that are capable of changing sex.

YCF Tournament: The Young Constructo­rs Forum of South Florida has the13th annual YCF Fishing Tournament for kingfish, dolphin, wahoo and tuna from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina in Pompano Beach. Entry fee is $1,000 per boat for six anglers. Proceeds benefit Constructi­on Angels, which helps families of constructi­on workers who have lost their lives while working on a jobsite. SUP races: Island Water Sports has the Sunshine Sup Series Saturday starting at 9 a.m. south of Pompano Pier. There are 3-mile, 6-mile and sprint races in several divisions, plus free kids races. Pier cleanup: Dania Beach Pier has its fifth annual cleanup dive from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday. Certified divers are needed to remove debris, fishing line, lures and sinkers from the water.
