Airline to add 4 routes from Fort Lauderdale
Allegiant Air plans to add four routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport starting in October.
On Oct. 1, the Las Vegas carrier will begin nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Portsmouth, N.H., followed by service to AkronCanton, Ohio, on Oct. 2 and Rochester, N.Y., on Oct. 9.
New seasonal nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Rapids, Mich., will begin Dec. 16 and run through April, Allegiant said in a news release.
As of May, Allegiant served 11 mar- kets from Fort Lauderdale including Asheville, N.C.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Columbus, Ohio, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Memphis, Tenn.
Allegiant has been in the news because of cancellations at St. PeteClearwater International Airport, some related to maintenance. The airline canceled 14 flights leaving or arriving there since June 17, when an Allegiant plane made an emergency landing.
Allegiant also has been in a labor dispute with pilots. In May, a court blocked the pilots’ union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1224, from striking.
Kent George, Broward County Aviation Department director of avi- ation, said he welcomed the additional flights to markets he considered underserved. Tourism officials also are enthusiastic about Allegiant’s Fort Lauderdale expansion.
“Allegiant Air has been a great partner to the destination, bringing thousands of visitors to our sunkissed shores,” said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
To promote the new routes, Allegiant is offering fares from $69 to $99 one way. Purchases must be made by Friday at Allegiant.com for travel by Feb. 16. Seats are limited and not available on all flights. For information, go to Allegiant.com
