High-steppin’ art
Women in snazzy shoes the muse behind exhibit in Lake Worth.
Joyce Brown sees feet everywhere. Walking up and down along South J Street in Lake Worth, just outside the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, are women in incredible shoes, she says.
“We thought it’d be fun to turn it into art,” said Brown, president of Clay Glass Metal Stone and of the nonprofit Flamingo Clay Studio.
That led to the Shoe Fetish/Foot Fetish Art Show, which runs through July 2. With about 60 works from local artists planned, Brown says it is one of the cooperative gallery’s most anticipated shows.
“We’re giving artists an opportunity to express themselves other than the usual,” Brown said. “And to have fun with the topics that we choose.”
And they have, with artists dipping their toes into a variety of media, such as hanging glass wind chimes, foot jewelry, ceramic shoeboxes, shoe fetish tiles, and foot and shoe planters.
Delray Beach illustrator Anita Lovitt created “Shoefirmations,” a coloring book with 24 black-line drawings of shoes. Prints of the book will be available for purchase for $12.50 each.
Also a watercolor painter, Lovitt wondered what she could do with a shoe fetish theme and stumbled upon the idea when attending an adult coloring night at Unity Church in Delray Beach.
“I asked: ‘What’s the appeal?’ ” Lovitt said. Those attending cited the enjoyment of coloring books and the connection they bring to childhood memories.
“I thought a coloring book of shoes will be great — women like shoes, and they don’t always like to wear the high heels,” she said. The show focuses mainly on women, as do a lot of the gallery’s shows, Brown said.
The next showcase, in August, will be The Male Form, as men have asked for equal time, she said.
