Prepare for next evacuation
One morning or evening drive on Interstate 95, I-75 or the Turnpike dramatically demonstrates the inability of Broward County and all of South Florida to evacuate the area in the face of a coming storm.
The solution in part is contraflow lane reversals. By cutting controllable crossovers between southbound and northbound lanes, the public — under the direction of the authorities — could use both sides northbound at the same time, doubling our evacuation capacity.
The meager southbound traffic and/or emergency vehicles can take the state roads. This solution is in place in Louisiana. El Niño has apparently given us a one-year window. Save lives. Do it now.
If you are the decision maker at the highway department, please remember it’s your family caught in that traffic jam.
