Deadline nears for Hallandale’s mini grant program

- By Sara Shell Staff Writer

Hallandale Beach is helping nonprofits help the community.

Each year, the city’s Community Partnership Grants Program offers mini grants to charities, and the deadline to apply for this year’s batch is coming up soon.

“It’s a very competitive program,” said Assistant City Manager Jennifer Frastai. “On a yearly basis, [the city] budgets $50,000 for mini grants. It’s meant for programs up to $10,000.”

Organizations must apply under a priority, which includes law enforcement, education, cultural arts, recreation and health and wellness, and must serve and benefit Hallandale residents.

Grant applications are reviewed by an advisory committee. The applications are scored, and organizations that receive at least a 70 are then invited for an oral presentation. Final recommendations go before the City Commission for approval.

Hallandale Beach has been offering separate mini grants since 2013.

“There’s been some excellent programming that’s come from these mini grants,” Frastai said. “Every program has to benefit the residents of Hallandale or the Hallandale Beach schools.”

For example, Frastai said that Hallandale Elementary School received a technology mini grant to purchase laptops for its fourthgraders. The laptops helped prepare students for computer testing they would have as fifth-graders.

“The mini grant program is a way to offer additional programs and services to the community,” she said. “It helps establish and create sustainability for the new or smaller 501(c)(3) organizations that support the residents of Hallandale Beach.”

The deadline for applying for this cycle is June 30. Applications will be reviewed in July, and grants will be awarded in September.
