Struggling Saints to get Brees back

- Tribune news services

Drew Brees is expected to return as the Saints’ starting quarterback Sunday night against the Cowboys in the Superdome, Saints coach Sean Payton said Friday.

“We’re planning on starting him, based on the work week,” Payton said after practice. “He’s thrown well. I thought he looked sharp today.”

Brees missed the Saints’ 27-22 loss to the Panthers on Sunday because of a bruised rotator cuff in his right (throwing) shoulder. The injury occurred on a hit in the second quarter of a Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers.

Brees has started all but two games since joining the Saints in 2006. The only other start he missed was at the end of the 2009 regular season, when he was healthy and the Saints had already clinched the No. 1 playoff seeding in the NFC.

Brees is officially listed as probable. If he does start as planned, he’ll return to a club that is 0-3 and in desperate need of a victory.

McCoy out indefinitely:

Bills running back LeSean McCoy is out indefinitely after revealing he had a setback with his hamstring injury last week.

McCoy spoke about the setback for the first time Friday. He said he was making progress in his recovery from the left hamstring injury before the Bills’ Week 3 game against the Dolphins but hurt it again Sept. 24. McCoy attempted to play through the injury in a 41-14 victory over the Dolphins but ran for just16 yards on11carries.

“I was getting better,” McCoy said. “And then that Thursday I kind of hurt it again, and that’s where it went wrong. I tried to really push it. I guess I messed something up.”

McCoy originally injured his hamstring Aug. 18 in training camp.

“One thing I just promised myself is I can’t go out there if I’m not 100 percent,” McCoy said. “Whatever it is, I’m rushing to get back, but I’m not playing until I’m 100 percent.”

With numbers low at running back, the Bills promoted Cierre Wood from the practice squad to the active roster.
