Geffrard TD return seals it for Piper

CORAL SPRINGS — Ja’Quan Geffrard returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown with just over six minutes remaining to lift Piper over Monarch 26-21in a District 11-8A game on Friday.

It was one of four big special teams plays by the undefeated Bengals (5-0, 1-0 in district, who were penalized 20 times for 137 yards.

Jaycob Williams had a 60-yard kickoff return to set up Rashawn Fraser’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and then Bryand Rincher had a 62-yard punt return to set up Fraser’s touchdown pass to Ja’Quez Geffrard in the fourth quarter.

The final key play came with just 1:07 remaining as Piper’s Dayvon Medina punted the ball down to the Monarch 1 with1:07 remaining, forcing the Knights (1-4, 0-2) to drive the length of the field to win the game.

Monarch got the ball down to the Piper 40, but time ran out as Xavious Thomas took a short pass and was shoved out of bounds on the game’s final play.

Thomas rushed for 137 yards on 17 carries, scoring on runs of 3 and 18 yards for the Knights .—

ARCHBISHOP MCCARTHY 34, GALDES 7: Anthony Rey rushed for 146 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns Friday night to lead Archbishop McCarthy.

The senior running back scored on a 60-yard jaunt on the first play of the second half to put the game away for the Mavericks. Glades Day dropped to 3-3.

Rey also scored on a sixyard run up the middle in the second quarter. Another touchdown was called back by penalty in the fourth quarter.

Senior kicker Nick Costa had two field goals for the Mavericks (6-0). Eric Paul, the senior quarterbac­k for McCarthy scored the final touchdown on a keeper on fourth and goal.

MCARTHUR 52, COOPER CITY 22: Kenny Stanley and Deon Jones combined to throw four touchdown passes as McArthur pulled away late in the second half to defeat Cooper City 52-22 in a District 15-7A matchup Friday evening.

Stanley was 6-of-9 for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Jones, who didn’t miss a beat coming in from the bench completed 9-of-10 attempts for 127 yards and a pair of scores.

The Mustangs (5-0, 2-0 in district) forced three early turnovers to take a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Jovan Seraphin scored on a 41-yard touchdown run on McArthur’s first play from scrimmage.

But the Cowboys (2-3, 1-1 in district) outscored the home side 22-13 in the middle quarters which included a 32 yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown by Michigan commitment Rashad Weaver to cut the lead down to 25-22.

Jones threw touchdown passes of 11 and 14 yards to Dominick Watt and Avery Severe while Jerome Lindo scored the second of his two rushing touchdowns to put the game away.
