DOLPHINS
“We are going to conduct a thorough process led by Mike Tannenbaum to select our head coach that will not be constrained by convention in our approach. This search will be thorough and we will take it wherever we need to go. I appreciate everything Dan Campbell has done this season and he has earned the opportunity to be considered for head coach. We’ve also identified several promising candidates and will begin work immediately.”
Ross didn’t identify any of those candidates by name.
Injury update
Center Mike Pouncey (foot/ankle) and linebacker Jelani Jenkins (ankle) didn’t practice Friday, which was the last practice of the season, and are listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
Right tackle Ja’Wuan James (toe) and wide receiver Rishard Matthews (ribs) are listed as questionable, although Campbell said they’re in the same situation as Pouncey and
Jenkins.
Center Jamil Douglas (ankle) and wide receiver Kenny Stills (thigh) are also questionable. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill (thigh/knee), wide receiver Jarvis Landry (knee) and guard Billy Turner (calf ) are probable.
Taylor eyes more
Zac Taylor, the offensive play caller/quarterback coach, said he thinks his brief experience calling plays has reinforced his belief he’s suited to become a full-time offensive coordinator.
“Absolutely,” Taylor said. “I, maybe to a fault, have a lot of confidence in myself. I’ve always dreamed about being a coordinator, I think every coach does that. You always think about the next job, but I’ve enjoyed the role.
“We haven’t had as much success as I would’ve hoped, but I’ve enjoyed, I’ve learned and I’m thankful for the coaches and the players for their commitment.”
Patmon gets look
Expect cornerback Tyler Patmon, the second-year player from Oklahoma State, to get a look against the Patriots.
Patmon, undrafted in 2014, started for Dallas earlier this year when the Cowboys defeated the Dolphins. He gained a measure of attention in training camp for his fight with Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant and his participation in a training-camp fight with the St. Louis Rams.
Patmon, who started six games at nickel defensive back for Dallas, was released by the Cowboys on Dec. 15, and signed to the Dolphins practice squad on Dec. 17. He was promoted to the 53-man roster Saturday.
“This search will be thorough and we will take it wherever we need to go.”
