The popular gift has been causing injuries all across South Florida this holiday season. Hospitals in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties have treated at least 40 people due to hoverboards. Injuries included broken and fractured wrists, as well as concussions. Here’s a sampling of what Sun Sentinel readers have to say about it:

If you don’t fall off one and get hurt, it just might burn your house down when you recharge it. There’s this thing called walking. I know it’s so 2014, but you don’t get hurt and it won’t set your house on fire either. CULLY WAGGONER

Whatever happened to getting your child a bicycle for Christmas? People whine about obesity, yet they purchase a device to make them less active. Only in America. RICH METZ

Of course they spike, the number was zero last year, because the things did not exist. I will bet, if you do your research, the same thing happened with skateboards, roller skates and later, Rollerblades. I will double-down on the injuries caused by electricity, before and after it was readily available. MIKE ALWINE

Gives new meaning to the phrase, “Look Ma, no hands!” CARLOS VELAZQUEZ

People get hurt riding bikes — should they get rid of bikes too? DERRICK CERGE

Who is to blame, the adults making the purchase or the hoverboard? SOLON ARGUELLO

No one saw that coming? PATTY DALY GAITAN

Haven’t they banned the flipping thing over there yet? C’mon guys, keep up Blimey! JONATHAN ROCKETMAN THOMAS

Rollerblades in the ’90s, now hoverboards FRED YAN

That’s funny because these aren’t hoverboards to begin with. WYATT AULT

Release 1,000,000 skateboards into the youth population all on the same day and you will have the same story (if not worse). This is not news, this is stating the obvious. ERIC TOMCZAK

People are lazy as it is. Parents don’t blame your child for not wanting to go anywhere that requires walking. CRISTINA COSTA VALE DAVID

Idiot parents were warned! Wait until the battery starts blowing up while the kid’s on it! CHUCK LEAVITT

And people keep buying them. Duh. MIKE BAZ
