The Florida League of Cities calls the problem a “cottage industry” that has spread across the state, costing taxpayers millions of dollars, and enriching a small group of lawyers who make a living on fees allowed to compensate for filers of public records complaints.
Defenders of Florida’s Sunshine Laws should welcome any legislation that weeds out so-called “mischievous characters,” so that public agencies can concentrate on the true purpose of making records available in a timely fashion to Florida citizens. The league apparently believes that most legislators understand the problem and are anxious to preserve the integrity of the Public Records Act as the original authors intended.
