’Noles could win big with late surge

- — Brendan Sonnone

IN THE BAG: There are many unknowns for FSU heading into today, but the Seminoles at least have the majority of their big-time needs filled. Florida State has seven recruits who already enrolled and are on campus — headlined by California QB Malik Henry — and will not have to worry about signing day surprises from V irginia CB Levonta Taylor and Lakeland Lake Gibson OC Baveon Johnson. Both pledges are considered top 50 prospects nationally. Getting Crawford ville Waku lla WR Keith Gavin to re-commit last week was a significant get for FSU’s staff.

UP FOR GRABS: This is will likely be the most active signing day of the Jimbo Fisher era and perhaps the most fruitful. The Seminoles are in the mix for about eight blue-chip prospects and are expected to add at least three additions to a class that already consists of 21 pledges. Offensive linemen Landon Dickerson of North Carolina and Jauan Williams of Washington D.C. are both considered strong FSU leans, as is Fort Lauderdale American Heritage DE Brian Burns. FSU would like to add at least one more corner back—either Kissimmee Osceola’s Carlos Becker or Coconut Creek’s Trayvon Mullen — and is hopeful it can beat Texas for Houston LB Dontavious Jackson.

OVERALL OUTLOOK: FSU had the No. 3 class nationally as of Tuesday evening and could conceivably make a jump to No. 1 with a strong finish. There’s room for powerhouse programs across the nation to jockey for position with dozens of big-time prospects still undecided, but FSU has positioned itself to finish inside the top 10 for the third time in three years.
