Woman killed crossing StateRoad 7 is identified

The pedestrian who was struck and killed crossing StateRoad 7 in Lauderdale Lakes has been identified.

Broward Sheriff’s traffic homicide investigat­ors say Goonwatty Ramnarine, 59, ofMargate, was crossing in the middle of the 4000 block of StateRoad 7 near Park Lakes Elementary School, just before 7 a.m. Tuesday when shewas hit.

Ramnarinew­as on herway towork as an aide in a nearby church-run preschool when shewas struck, according to Michael Lauther, her brother-in-law.

GranvilleR­obinson, 68, ofNorth Lauderdale, was driving southbound in the far left lane on StateRoad 7 south of Northwest 41st Street when hisToyota Corolla’s front bumper struck Ramnarine, according to detectives.

Investigat­ors said shewas not using a crosswalk and thatRobins­on called 911 after the collision and stayed at the scene.

Broward Sheriff FireRescue responded and pronounced Ramnarine dead about 6:49 a.m.

Robinson did not appear to be impaired or speeding but Broward Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigat­e the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the fatality.

The area is a reduced speed zone during school days, and has posted safety signs and crosswalks.

Anative of Guyana, Ramnarinem­oved to South Florida fromNewYor­k more than10 years ago, according to Lauther. Among survivors is her husband, Nanraj Ramnarine.
