About the Zika virus

-

Local mosquitoes cannot yet spread the virus, which has appeared in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, but sufferers can spread the virus to mosquitoes.

It can cause birth defects in women bitten while pregnant.

Fever, rash and conjunctivitis develop in 20 percent of cases.

There is no vaccine for the virus.

The CDC recommends pregnant women postpone trips to affected areas.
