Eric Davis Jr. scored 15 points and sparked a flurry of first-half 3-pointers for No. 24 Texas as the Longhorns held off a late rally to beat No. 10 West Virginia 85-78 on Tuesday night in Austin, Texas.

Davis made four 3-pointers in the first half and Texas (17-9, 8-5 Big 12) had 10 in the game in capping a regular-season sweep of the Mountainee­rs. Texas broke a two-game losing streak.

Texas coach Shaka Smart had implored his team to show more emotion heading in a tough, late-season stretch against four ranked opponents in six games. Davis responded with arguably his best half of the season after scoring seven total points in the previous four games.

Isaiah Taylor led Texas with 23 points.

61: A.J. Hammons had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Johnny Hill added a seasonhigh 15 points to help the No. 17 Boilermake­rs get past the Wildcats in West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue (21-6, 9-5 Big Ten) has not lost consecutiv­e games this season.

Northweste­rn (17-10, 5-9) was led by Tre Demps with 16 points and BryantMcIn­tosh, who had 14 points and four assists. The Wildcats have lost seven of nine overall and five straight on the road.

Hammons had 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half as the Boilermake­rs saw a 12-point lead cut to 35-27.

NU got as close as 39-35 in the second half, but Purdue got consecutiv­e 3pointers from Ryan Cline and Hill to spur a 10-2 run thatmadeit 64-50with 4:39 left. After that, NU couldn’t get closer than seven.

Layups: Missouri said it dismissed junior guardWes Clark from the team because he “failed to meet the academic expectatio­ns of the Mizzou Athletics Department.” Clark started all 25 games this season for Missouri, averaging 9.8 points and three rebounds. ... Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said forward Kenny Goins is expected to be out of the lineup for 2-4 weeks with an injured left knee.
